Making Waves: Wisdom for Today from the History of Feminist Organizations in the Twin Ports

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Event Details

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a wave of feminist activism and organizing broke on the shores of the Twin Ports. Its impact has shaped and transformed the lives of women and men in this community, the nation, and the world. Beginning with one of the first rape crisis programs and battered women’s shelters in the country, pioneering organizations sprang up all over Duluth.

Join us as Beth Bartlett, author of Making Waves: Grassroots Feminism in Duluth and Superior and retired professor of Women’s Studies at UMD,  provides an overview of the histories of ten of these long-lived grassroots feminist organizations, including the Program to Aid Victims of Sexual Assault (PAVSA), Safe Haven Shelter and Resource Center, the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (DAIP), the Women’s Health Center, the Northcountry Women’s Coffeehouse, the Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse (CASDA), Women’s Transitional Housing, Mending the Sacred Hoop, Aurora: A Northland Lesbian Center, and the American Indian Community Housing Organization (AICHO).

Today, so many of the advances for women brought about these organizations are under threat.  Now more than ever we need the wisdom and inspiration of these feminist movers and shakers to guide us in continuing to work to secure a just future in which women and people of all races, classes, sexualities, ages, and abilities are respected.
