What was it like to have a baby in 1936? How about 1962? Having a baby is a significant event in a woman’s life, but stories of those events are rarely included in the historical record. This presentation includes interviews with women who had babies in those eras, and sheds some light on the history of birth in Duluth. Learn how it moved from homes and midwives to hospitals and male doctors, and now sometimes back again.  This presentation will also share excerpts of “Mothers of a Silent Generation” (working title), a theatrical presentation based on the oral history interviews with these women and discussion of merging history and theatre.

Gina Temple-Rhodes is an independent researcher and oral historian from Duluth, MN who is passionate about recording stories from elders. She began researching the history of birth in Duluth in 2011 by interviewing women who had given birth in the 1930s-1950s and was inspired to dig deeper into the historical record to find details about this seldom-recorded topic.

Angie B. Frank is the director of Heart Theatre in Duluth, MN.  Heart Theatre practices theatre in non-traditional places with underrepresented voices, as a means to address social justice issues. Participants and audiences experience theatre as a tool for transformation through the telling and hearing of each others’ stories. Angie is currently working on a play related to birth story oral histories in Duluth.
